Water with proven effectiveness
The water of the Comano Spa is the most studied in the world. The investment in research amounts to more than 750,000 euros.
Results certified by the GB Mattei research institute in collaboration with the research center of the University of Trento.
Composition
The water of Comano, slightly mineralised, calcium magnesium bicarbonate with a pH close to neutral, flows at a constant temperature of 27 degrees. Its documented anti-inflammatory, soothing and regenerating properties give hydration, freshness and softness to the skin.
Scientific research on Comano Thermal Water
In Comano, research has always been the starting point for developing treatment protocols for dermatological conditions.
Studies on the effectiveness of balneotherapy in Comano for skin diseases began in 1928.
Thanks to the work of the G.B. Mattei Institute, in collaboration with prestigious entities such as CIBIO of Trento and the University of Pavia, Terme di Comano is the leading center in Italy and among the first in Europe for the quantity of research in dermatological thermal therapy.
Numerous scientific evidences have shown that Comano thermal baths can provide long-term benefits with excellent results and no side effects. Balneotherapy can represent a valid therapeutic complement to traditional treatments, even for patients who wish to temporarily suspend pharmacological therapies.
Skin microbiota, the study by Terme di Comano
Among the many studies conducted in Comano in recent years, the one recently carried out on the skin microbiota stands out. This is a set of microorganisms that make up our body, which is very important for our immune system and is the first interface between us and the environment. Microbial populations on the skin defend it from pathogens and modulate how our defense system interacts with other organisms in the environment.
The research, entitled "Effect on the microbiome of treatment with thermal waters at the Terme di Comano in patients with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis" was conducted by the G.B. Mattei Institute for thermal research, chaired by Dr. Mario Cristofolini and Dr. Stefania Farina (Specialist in Dermatology, Venereology and Aesthetic Thermal Medicine) in collaboration with CIBIO of Trento and Professor Segata's team.
The results of the study on the skin microbiota. The research started from a firm point: diseased skin presents an alteration of the microbiota called dysbiosis. The aim of the study was therefore to understand whether Comano Thermal Water was able to rebalance the microbiota and bring it closer to that present on healthy skin. Skin samples were taken from the group of people suffering from psoriasis undergoing thermal therapy using a skin swab, both before and after the thermal treatment.
Patients were divided into three different groups: patients undergoing therapy with 12 thermal baths, patients undergoing therapy with 12 thermal baths and hydro-drinking therapy (ingestion of thermal water as a drink), and patients undergoing therapy with 12 thermal baths and phototherapy.
The result? Most patients who participated in the study showed an improvement in psoriatic lesions after balneotherapy treatment, especially when combined with phototherapy, and thus a rebalancing of the skin microbiota.
The research on the skin microbiota of the Terme di Comano thus proved to be an innovative and exceptionally far-reaching study, since it is the first time in the world that such a result has been demonstrated. It is also further confirmation in the scientific validation of Comano's thermal treatments, which joins many other investigations carried out in recent years, such as the one (Jousson et al) that highlighted how the water of the Terme di Comano is rich in beneficial microorganisms, most of which were previously unknown, such as Mezorhizobium comanense, capable of interacting with those present on the skin, providing important benefits.
