Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema) is an inflammation of the skin characterised by periods of well-being alternating with worsening phases in which the skin becomes dry, reddened and very itchy. Atopic dermatitis is very common in childhood, often occurring in the first few months of life and may disappear during school age or after puberty.

Atopic dermatitis can manifest itself in different ways: dryness and itching are
usually always present, and can be joined by redness, swelling, and scabs. The
itching sensation and subsequent scratching often create lesions that are easy
sites for skin infections; the most commonly affected areas are usually the
face, neck, and the crooks of the elbows and knees.
The causes
Atopic dermatitis is a complex condition for which no single cause can be identified.
