Psoriasis, how to recognise it
Psoriasis is a chronic and relapsing skin inflammation that presents with lesions in erythematous and scaly patches. Psoriasis can occur at any age, although it usually appears between the ages of 20 and 30. Psoriasis presents with reddened areas characterised by skin thickening and the presence of pearly white scales. The sites where psoriasis most frequently occurs are: head, elbows, knees, sacral region, hands and feet.
The causes
There is a genetic predisposition for psoriasis, but some events in life can lead to its appearance on the skin. The triggering situations have very different origins: severe emotional stress (a bereavement, an accident, the loss of a job), trauma to the skin (major wounds, permanent injuries), outbreaks of infection (streptococcal pharyngitis), certain medications. Lifestyle can also be a decisive factor; smoking, alcohol, unhealthy diet, obesity and stress can all favour the occurrence of psoriasis.
How it is treated
Psoriasis manifests itself in many different types and the therapeutic interventions that can be activated are different and customised according to the type of psoriasis and the severity of the symptoms. Drug therapies often offer immediate results, but these do not last.
