Atopic dermatitis (atopic eczema) is an inflammation of the skin characterised by periods of well-being alternating with worsening phases in which the skin becomes dry, reddened and very itchy. Atopic dermatitis is very common in childhood, often occurring in the first few months of life and may disappear during school age or after puberty.
